Many provide multiple layouts, but rarely does a destination offer differing experiences at each. The resort is home to two top ranked public golf courses — the century old Donald Ross Course and the modern-era Pete Dye Course. One other similarity?
I knew French Lick, Indiana, produced one of the greatest basketball players of all time in Larry Bird. Actually, it was more of a drive-by, checking out the hoop on which Bird learned to shoot and the nearby high school where a statue is erected in honor of the basketball Hall of Famer. The resort is home to two hotels — the French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs Hotel — that have almost rooms between them, two championship golf courses, a casino, a 27,square foot spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and 3, forested acres.
Architect: Donald Ross Year: Recently restored to its original Donald Ross glory this course features wide fairways framed by native fescue grass and an exceptional set of greens that prove to the be the real challenge of the course. In the course played host to the PGA Championship and was won by the infamous golden era professional Walter Hagen.
The Donald Ross Course at French Lick allows golfers to step back in time and experience the game it was meant to be played. This championship course built in has hosted many local, regional and national tournaments - most notably the PGA Championship won by Walter Hagen. First time player here. Good golf course and we enjoyed our round although I thought a couple greens were tricked up a little too much for my tastes.

Though full of the design features that make Golden Age courses a delight to play, the Ross Course at the French Lick Resort also requires stout hitting, as evidenced by the yard fourth hole above. What is especially impressive is how Ross connected all the holes without a weak or filler hole in the bunch, all the while preserving short green to tee walks. Like many of his courses with nines that return to the clubhouse, the first and tenth holes parallel each other and then head off to form a loop in the opposite direction other examples include Seminole, Mountain Ridge, Plainfield and Mark Twain.
